Zebra Activity & Board Games

As I have told the children last Friday that today we will be doing a summary activity about zebra.

I divided all the facts and information that the children learned from the video into different colour papers. Some samples were shown below:

Everyone will come and pick a piece of colour paper with phrases or words. They needed to figure out which information should go together and pasted them onto the manila card that I have prepared.

Pictures taken during the activity:

This is how the poster looked like:

Then, I brought in the board game I mentioned to the children last Friday. I found some pins for them to represent themselves. There were about 16 of them in the class yesterday, so I divided the children in to 3 groups with about 5-6 children in a group. The children will need to take turns to roll the dice and to move the pin on the board. I placed the board game on the floor so that everyone can see it.

Here were some pictures taken during the board games activity:

The children wanted to try to play on their own. Therefore, I shall allocate some time for them to try out the game on their own tomorrow.

On the other hand, we needed some of this kind of tin for art work.

Dear parents, kindly try your best to help your kids to collect some from home. We needed it  by end of the 1st week of June. Thank you.

Besides that, they could add in the ear if they could do it and added in the tail and the part of the front mouth. The art work would consider complete.

Then, I brought in the poster of zebra that Pomegranate done before. The children get to read the information on it. I shall prepare the similar content and get the children to do one for their own class. Besides that, the Pomegranate's class children also did some board games for the animal theme. I kept some of it and managed to find them. I showed it to the class and they wanted to know how to play. We can also play that on next Monday.

** photos of the art work will be uploaded once it's ready.

Book Sharing

The music teacher played them a movie - Sound of Music. They only managed to watch half of the movie and shall continue on their next lesson.

Today, Shyi Yee brought us a short story book that she wanted to share with the class. I picked those short stories that related to animals. There were 2 stories that I picked. One of it was about the hippo that was looking for ways to cool him down. Another story is about the silly snake that always frightens other animals. The animals wanted the crocodile to teach the silly snake a lesson.

On the other hand, Germaine also brought a storybook to share with the class. It is "The Boy who Ran with the Gazelles" by Marianna Mayer and pictures by Leonid Gore.

We only managed to read until the boy was caught by the hunters. We shall continue the story on the next day.

Sharing of the Gorilla Art

Usually, I will allow them to spend their whole snack time and we shall start our class around 4:30 pm. However, today, I was just worried that we might not be able to complete our activity today. Therefore, I have to cut short of their snack time and get them to complete their gorilla art work as soon as possible.

Fortunately, they could complete it before 4:45 pm. Then we started our sharing session today. The children had actually added in a lot of details in their gorilla art. I wanted them to share their art work. They could talk about where the gorilla is or what the gorilla is doing.

More on Gorillas

Today, we completed the story of The Lion King. On the other hand Germaine brought us another story book called "It Could Have Been Worse" by A.H Benjamin & Tim Warnes.

After the story book sharing session, I guided the children to recall the facts and information of gorilla that we went through on last Friday.

Then, I played a video about gorilla for the children to learn more about it.

Video #1: GORILLA: Animals for children. Kids videos. Kindergarten | Preschool learning

After that, I also played another video about the story of "Good Night, Gorilla". The children enjoyed it very much.

Video #2: Good Night Gorilla

We have about 30 minutes left, therefore, I distributed each a small piece of black colour art paper for the children to draw the gorilla on it. After that, they could cut it out and pasted it onto the blank A4 paper that I gave. They could also add in details onto the gorilla art work.

Gorillas

We have considered done for lion. We are moving on to another animal that is also found in Africa - gorilla.
Before we started to read any facts or information about gorilla, I get the children to tell me things that they might know about gorilla.

Wei Xiang: Gorilla is scary. Gorilla catch white ants.
Umeko: Gorilla is strong and bulky.
Jie Min: Gorilla can climb trees.
Alice: Gorilla is dark in colour. Blue.
Yun Han: It is grey.
Wei Xiang: Gorilla is very big. Like monkey.
Umeko: Gorilla can crunch big bones.
Wei Xiang: Gorilla eats meat.

Some of the children don't really agree with some of the feedback given here. Anyhow, I picked a book on gorilla and read to the class. From the book, it mentioned that gorilla is big and strong. It has dark black or dark brown fur. It likes to eat juicy leaves and plants. Besides that, they usually make nest on the floor for resting and sleeping. Most of the animals won't attack such a giant beast in the jungle. However, leopard likes to hunt their small little baby. The father gorilla is called the Silverback as it has a silver patch on the body.

We shall read more about gorilla next week.

Food Art - Lion Head

Food Art - Lion Head

Our food art project today is to use all the ingredients given to make a lion head.

The ingredients are such as bread, cherry tomatoes, raisins, roasted seaweeds, carrots, cheese, sweet corns and some mayonnaise.

Then, each of them was given a paper plate and a slice of bread. The children could use that to be the mane of the face of the lion. Then, once they had decided what ingredients to take, they could come out with their bowl to collect the ingredients.

They could immediately start their master piece of the lion head when they got their ingredients.

Here were some pictures of the lion head that they did:

After taking photos of their master piece, the children were eager to munch their lion head without a second thought. The children said it was tasty!
